Avoid even the appearance of wrong doing

Reagan once agreed to meet with some children who were thrilled to meet him but agreed to do so only in private lest it be perceived that the children were being exploited for publicity. Early Jewish and Christian wisdom advises to “avoid even the appearance of wrong doing” for even though our motives and actions are honorable the semblance of wrong doing tempts others to judge and be scandalized or disillusioned.
