Finding Meaning in Daily Routine

Rabbi Baal Shem Tov (“Master of the Good Name”) asked 3 students, “If you had only 6 months left to live, how would you spend them?”

The first student said “I would go to Jerusalem to the Wailing Wall and pray constantly.”

The second student said “I would not waste precious time traveling but would to to my room and begin to pray.”

The third student was silent and the others though perhaps he was dull and had nothing to say. So, the Rabbi asked him and he said

“I would continue my daily life and routine as usual.”

Baal Shem Tov declared the third student’s answer the best, for if we cannot find meaning in our daily life and routine, then we shall not find it at Jerusalem, or Mecca, or Kashi, or any other distant, exotic place of pilgrimage or sacred shrine.

And I add: “Wherever you go, there you are.”
